Here,  Corona, CA teacher  Milton J.  shares what could be an even better idea For years, we’ve tuned into our favorite singing competitions, voting for our favorites each week, and hoping they win the coveted record deal at the end of the season. We’ve watched as the juggernaut American Idol â€" a derivative of Pop Idol from Europe â€" gave way to others like The Voice and X-Factor. Many other worthy (and not-so-worthy) opponents have aimed to get a slice of the reality singing competition show pie. Yet, one thing many of us aspiring performers and singers dont realize is that local and regional singing competitions are actually a much better start than trying for a television show as your first venture into stardom. It’s First A TV Show I first tried out for American Idol at 17 years old. I was wide-eyed, eager, and willing to do whatever it took to get the smile from Paula, the fist pump from Randy, and the tepid accolade from Simon. What I soon realized over my two-day endeavor was that this was about 85% TV production and faux-reality, and only 15% singing competition and talent search. The Voice and X-Factor are no different. That does nothing for the kid who makes it to the round right before getting on television as their first foray into competition. While that didn’t deter me from the performing life at all, it very well could spell doom and gloom for the less-than-strong yet incredibly talented performer. These shows are perfect launching pads, but serve the seasoned performer with an established fanbase that’s larger than their circle of family and friends much better. But what do you end up thinking about in addition to those questions you are reading? The other people in the class; how fast theyre writing, the way theyre sitting, the moment each one stands up all finished and ready to turn in their finished product. Its human nature to be distracted by these things, but the nervous test-taking environment only accentuates it. A major piece of advice that will help you work through your test with minimal stress is that you must learn to block out those fellow students. You have the rest of the day and the rest of the week, outside and inside school to pay attention to those people now is not the time to be thinking about them. Every student is different when it comes to their test-taking abilities, so you cannot let their habits affect your own process. Some students can easily put their nerves on the back-burner and just race through a test without thinking twice. Some agonize over every single question and purposely use up every possible minute before the bell rings. Others anxiously tap their pencils against their desk, shake their feet, breathe loudly, or practice a multitude of other disrupting habits that could throw you off. You must put them out of your mind. You may also want to check out these tips on how to mentally prepare for test day. Easier said than done? Well, in this case, its mostly about the preparation. Getting into the right mindset to ignore these classmates before you enter the test-taking zone is key. Tell yourself a few things as you make your way to the classroom: No one is judging you A common reason many students feel anxious while taking a test in a room full of students is because they fear being judged for not completing the exam as quickly as others. Logically, that doesnt make sense if you really think about it. The students who are finishing their tests first are just happy and proud of themselves for completing it so fast. They are exiting that room or pulling out a book before you know it and have no worries about you. The students who are, in fact, overly-nervous and meticulously taking their time clearly have no concern for the way you are approaching the test. And finally, the students who are just anxiously looking around and zoning out, not really being able to focus on the test due to nerves, are more likely to be having the same worries you are and be more afraid of you judging them than having the time to judge you themselves. Here are some important habits of effective test takersthat you may find useful as well. Only you and your teacher deserve control over your grade By soaking up your thoughts in the actions of the surrounding test-takers, youre basically giving them power over your test score. Why should it matter if the guy next to you only needs ten minutes to finish the exam while you need the entire hour? If taking the entire hour means youll get an A, thats all that matters and even though that guy seems confident in his speedy test-taking skills, he may not end up doing so well. How would you feel later if the reason you got a poor grade was because you rushed through the test just to catch up to someone who ended up doing badly anyway? Dont let his fast process change your careful one; he is not determining your final grade, you and your teacher are. You have just as much power as they do Remember, you are all in the same boat. Other test-takers may be just as easily intimidated by you as you are by them. You might get freaked out by that insanely quick person who turns in the exam right away, but maybe youll appear insanely quick to someone else who can barely finish the test in the allotted time. There is no sense in tormenting yourself over how well everyone else is doing when you are part of everyone else to another nervous student. Its a vicious cycle that everyone just needs to let go of. No one test-taker has more influence over the class than anybody else. Stop assigning the power and just focus on you and your test. Ready to let go of this unnecessary worry and take your test? Repeat these thoughts to yourself as you head into the classroom and those papers on your desk will be the only things youll see. Think you know the answer? The correct answer is A. The author uses the single case of Acme to conclude that the war profoundly affected nascent businesses.  This assumes that Acmes growth rate is typical, or representative, of such businesses (A); otherwise, why hold it up as an example? As for (B), the author neednt assume that $10,000 isnt much of a profit.  Maybe he thinks it started out high and got even higher.  (C), which brings up other wars, is beyond the scope-the argument concerns World War II, period.  (D)s tricky, but its not assumed.  Notice that the author claims only that World War II had a profound, not salutary, effect on nascent businesses, so we dont know just how he feels about rapid growth rates.  As for (E), the author neednt assume Acmes managers had nothing to do with the companys success, just that the was also had an effect-and a marked one.

What Defines a Modern Library If it was allowed to drink tea and wrap myself in a blanket in the library I would definitely live there! Do you like to visit libraries and get new ideas? I hope so, I definitely do! But do we know a lot about them? Is modern library the same as the first library in the world?   The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writingâ€"the clay tablets discovered in Sumer, some dating back to 2600 BC. Private or personal libraries consisted of written books appeared in classical Greece in the 5th century BC. It is obviously that today library is not the same thing as it was many years ago.  Today we can find there much more then just usual paper books. Modern libraries are  more than just a  quiet studying space  for students. Some of them offer us different workshops and courses outside of formal, graded coursework, research materials.  Today, libraries are incubators for innovation, the great forums of modern times, where great minds congregate to learn and discover. They help to find many interesting friends and start to think outside the box. Today, we have not just private libraries that are open just for kings and queens â€" now there are  public,  budgetary,  municipal, personal (family)  and  training  libraries. Can you believe it? What a great variety! My family, for example, has great personal library, it consist of many old and modern books. I have not read all of them yet, but I will. Also, I visit public library twice a week. How often do you visit your local public library? Jorge Luis Borges, famous   Argentine writer, once said: I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library. There are many people in the world that like going to the libraries. Children, teenagers, adults and pensioners, poor and rich people, well-educated people and people without any education â€" different people enjoy using libraries!  Why? Well, its probably the best place to study or work in quiet and comfortable atmosphere, surf the internet, read unusual, uncommon and very old books, enjoy spending time on cool workshops and courses.  As  one famous  Russian historian and literary critic, teacher  and humanist Dmitry Likhachev said: If as a result of any disaster all centers of education and culture disappeared from the earth and the world had nothing but libraries  the world and people still would be able to revive. Library is a center of culture,  information and ideas. Modern libraries  mean a lot for humanity and even if they become more and more computerized and virtual, they are still unbelievably helpful, useful and important. And, of course,  we remember that libraries are very important and useful place  for tutors and their students. How can you do this exactly? Let’s take a look. Get in with the in crowd: Internships usually mean that you get to work with some pretty cool people in your field or industry. Whether this is a professor who has a lot of experience or a working professional that you aspire to be, you really want to be around them as much as you can and soak in their awesomeness. Sure, you are going to be doing a lot of brunt work and you can’t always be at the cool table, but sometimes you get to snag a spot, and you don’t want to waste the moment. For my creative writing internship, all of the interns had to help put on a Living Writers Series, where authors would come to our school, read from their books or poetry, and then host a QA. We had the opportunity to go to dinner with a few of them, and I got to tag along with Chang-Rae Lee, and he actually asked me about my own writing! I was so star struck and amazed that this successful author was taking the time to ask about little old me. It was such an amazing opportunity, and I wouldn’t have had the chance to be there if it weren’t for my internship. Moments like this have to be earned through hard work, so if you prove your worth, you might just get an in with the in crowd. Do you know how valuable that is in today’s society where everything is based off of connections? Watch the people you work with and for; they might just know someone somewhere who will help land you your dream job someday if you play your cards right. Take on extra work: During your internship, you probably won’t be the only intern that is bustling around, so try and really make sure that you stand out. Take on extra work when there is an opportunity to do so, put a lot of effort into everything that you do, don’t be afraid to ask questions or get clarifications to make sure that you are doing things right, and really show that you are grateful for the opportunity that you have and you won’t put it to waste. You want to leave your internship with the company begging you to stay on as an employee, or if they don’t have the room, at least leave in a way that will make them remember you and that will result in you getting some awesome reviews and letters of rec. Bond with other interns: All of you interns are in the same boat and same position, and while it may not seem “cool” or optimal to get all buddy-buddy with people that you have to work with, you never know when the connections might come in handy, or what friendships might be born. This doesn’t mean you have to be best friends with all of the interns, but if you take the time to get to know them, your future might just thank you for it. You might get a bit of training, but after that, you are expected to get your work done and figure it out, and also ask questions if you get lost. This is really valuable for when you go and get your job in the future, because your degree will give you the knowledge to work there, but you might not have all the skills under your belt yet. You’ll have to learn as you go, be quick on your feet, and show that you can watch and learn quickly. You can talk about this during a job interview, and prove that you are the right one to hire because you learned how to pick things up quickly during your internship. These are just a few ways to really squeeze everything you can out of your internship experience. Definitely make sure to get at least one or two of them under your belt before you graduate, to boost that resume and your confidence in the field.
